Instructions to Make Easy Homemade Butter
- Pour cream into your blender or food processor. If you own both appliances: a blender will be slightly faster, but it’s slightly easier to remove the finished product from a food processor.
- Blend for about 8-10 minutes. You are watching for a ball to form as the butter separates from the milk. That ball is your easy homemade butter! In a food processor, the walls of the processor will be lined with the creamy substance. My food processor made beautiful butter in 9 minutes.
- Next, you have a choice to go super easy, which gets you a softer butter, or use a cheesecloth to be sure that you are only getting butter solids into your butter and absolutely all the milk is removed.
- Refrigerate both the liquid and the butter. Use the separated liquid for your next batch of biscuits or other baked good recipe. After all, it’s fresh Buttermilk!
A) Cheesecloth method: If you have cheesecloth, line a strainer with it and then place the strainer over a container to catch the buttermilk. Pour the blender contents into the strainer. Gather up the cheesecloth around the solids and knead them together to form a log and then press out any excess water. Rinse the log under cold water and then pat dry with a paper towel. Season with the sea salt if desired.
OR
B) No cheesecloth: If you don’t have cheesecloth, then simply press the ball into a bowl and use the back of a spoon to press the ball against the bowl and then drain off any excess liquid. As you can see, we chose the easy route (of course).
You’ll get about 1&3/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup buttermilk from this recipe.

Easy homemade butter will last at least 2 weeks wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator.
Heavy Cream can usually be purchased in warehouse stores in 2 Quart cartons for about $6-$7. If you only made easy homemade butter with the entire carton you would get 6 cups of easy homemade butter. That’s about $2 per box (2 cups) of butter – compare that price with your local grocer and see how much you would save.
