How Long Do Pears Last?

How long do pears last? Whole pears can last 5-12 days if stored according our suggestions. The shelf life of pears depends when the pears were picked and how they are stored.

Pears are a popular fruit because of their fresh sweet taste, ease of eating with no need to peel, small waste production and high vitamin content. Fresh pears come in several different varieties including the popular Anjou, Bosc, Comice and Bartlett varieties. The skin of the pear can range from yellow to brown to green and even red.

Avoid any fresh fruit with broken skin or bruises. Pears ripen after being picked, so don't be afraid to purchase unripe or firm pears to ripen at home. Choose Bartlett and Bosc pears to eat that give slightly when gently pressed, but beware that most pears bruise very easily. Anjou and Comice pears are eaten when firmer and slightly crunchy, but are usually sliced thin because of this. Bartlett pears are generally the most delicate, so transport them carefully and finish them sooner than other varieties. Anjou pears are generally tougher so are often sold in plastic bags and can take days to properly ripen on the counter.

How to tell if Pears are bad, rotten or spoiled?

Practicing proper hygiene and food safety techniques will help prevent foodborne illness.

Some common traits of bad pears are multiple brown bruises or blemishes on the skin. If you touch the pear and your thumb pierces the skin, that's not a good sign. Sometimes, you won't know the pear is bad until cutting it open and finding the center very soft and brown.

There are, of course, certain health risks associated with spoiled foods so always remember to practice food safety and enjoy your foods before their shelf life has expired!

How to store Pears to extend their shelf life?

Ripe pears do not last very long on the counter or pantry and will keep much longer if stored in the refrigerator. They can be stored in a plastic bag or other container. If the pears are cut, they should be wrapped tightly to limit air exposure.

If your pears are not yet ripe, they will ripen nicely if placed inside a paper bag and left on the counter for 1-5 days. Be sure to check the bag daily when ripening because pears, especially the Bartlett variety, will ripen quickly and then become over-ripe and spoiled even quicker. Do not wash or remove those tiny produce stickers (they will tear the skin, allowing it to spoil faster) until ready to eat. Remember, once pears are ripe they will remain fresh longer if stored in the refrigerator.

Freezing is not recommended for pears.

Some benefits of proper food storage include eating healthier, cutting food costs and helping the environment by avoiding waste.
